Off-Campus Study

Notes from Abroad: Daniel in Belgium

Notes from Abroad is a new feature on the Off-Campus Programs website, in which we highlight small snippets of a student’s experience.  This week’s feature is from Daniel Solano ’18 a double major in Political Science and Economics currently studying in Brussels, Belgium.

Bonjour de Bruxelles,

My name is Daniel Solano and I am an economics and politics double major currently studying abroad in Brussels, Belgium. My study abroad experience has been magical and mesmerizing and I am very glad I still have more time to enjoy it. Traveling around Belgium and parts of Europe has been eye opening, but what has been the greatest part of my study abroad experience has been the language. I have taken two semesters worth of French in Lake Forest College, and living in Brussels has given me the perfect chance to put this to work. My French has improved drastically since I have arrived and one of the greatest joys here in Brussels has been using my French in my “vie quotidienne” or everyday life. Many students in their time abroad worry about where they will travel during their stay or try drastically to find things that remind them of their home country whereas I am having an excellent time here in this cultural immersion. Being here in Brussels has allowed me to improve from having to do everything in daily life in English or Spanish to now able to do everything in French. I am very happy about this learning experience and alongside traveling and living with a homestay family has made every aspect of this study abroad experience truly amazing and has convinced me to search for graduate school opportunities here in Belgium. I have so many people to think for helping make this experience become a reality including my parents, professors, the off-campus study office and the G. Dale Smith, ’37 and Ruth Peterson Smith Endowed Scholarship Fund for their generous assistance. I am very gracious to all of them for their immense aid and could not have done this program without them.
